Jamia Hamdard Appoints Professor Iqbal S. Hasnain it’s very first Pro-Chancellor
New Delhi: Professor Iqbal S. Hasnain has been appointed the first Pro-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard University.
Professor Iqbal Hasnain is a renowned scientist on Himalayan glaciology, who has done pioneering work on climate change and its impact on water resources. He served as Vice-Chancellor of University of Calicut, Kerala, from 2002 to 2006. Previously, he held the post of Professor of Glaciology, Jawaharlal Nehru University (India), where he introduced glaciology as a subject at the postgraduate research level. Between 2010 and 2013, he worked at Stimson Center, Washington DC, on a State Department-funded programme on shared water resources of the Himalayas.
He served as Chairman of the Glacier and Climate Change Commission established by the State Government of Sikkim (India). Time magazine, USA, prominently featured Hasnain’s work in its December 14, 2009 article “Climate Change: The Tragedy of the Himalayas”.
As a member of Hamdard National Foundation (India) – HECA (Hamdard Education and Cultural Aid), he has been a strong advocate of skill-based education which empowers the poor and marginalized sections of society.
On his appointment, Professor Hasnain said, “It is a great honour to take the vision of Late Hakeem Abdul Hameed, founder of Jamia Hamdard, to the next level. The present leadership of Hamdard National Foundation is committed to make Jamia Hamdard a great centre of learning.”
Professor Hasnain was awarded Padma Shri by the President of India for his contributions in advancing the science of glaciology in India.
