Jamia Hamdard hosts 9th International Conference on Food Processing, Nutrition and Fortification with Emphasis on Vitamin D

New Delhi: School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Technology, Department of Food Technology in Collaboration with School of Unani Medicine and Education Research, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi hosted the 9th international conference on Food Processing, Nutrition and Fortification with emphasis on vitamin D at the University Convention centre on 5th and 6th March 2020.
The entire idea of the conference focused on providing an interactive platform to the students and to the invited speakers from USA, UAE, Europe and India who delivered their lectures and enlightened the students with their experiences.
More than 400+ delegates which included the speakers, research-scholars and academicians participated in the event. There were 200 poster presentations and more than 20 oral presentations. The conference was presided by Prof. (Dr.) Seyed Ehtesham Hasnain, the Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard (Hamdard University). The Conference was graced by Chief Guest Mr Siraj Hussain, IAS and Former Vice Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard and Guest of Honour Mr Hamid Ahmad, CEO Hamdard Laboratories.
Besides this the keynote speakers included Prof. Ravinder Singh who is presently Professor at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, Prof Sunil Wimalawansa who is Professor Cardio, Metabolic and Endocrine Institute, New Jersey, USA, Dr. Naveen K. Rastogi who is presently Chief Scientist and Head of the Department of Food Engineering at CFTRI, Mysore, India and Prof. Afrozul Haq who is the Dean of School of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Jamia Hamdard and also the president of the conference.
“Vitamin D deficiency is widely prevalent in India, despite abundant sunshine. Fortification of staple foods with vitamin D is a viable strategy to target an entire population. Before fortification programs are designed and implemented in India, it is necessary to study the efficacy of the global vitamin D fortification programs and then improve upon them to suit the Indian scenario”, says Prof. Afrozul Haq, Dean of School of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology.

The conference was joined by the eminent speakers Dr. Kathleen Meehan who is presently an Associate Professor, Khawarizmi International College, Abu Dhabi and Maj. Gen. (Dr.) R. Marwaha, Additional Director and Head, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, Delhi, India who have an expertise in their respective fields. The two day conference was sponsored by Hamdard Laboratories, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and many more.
