Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas changing lives of students from disadvantaged background
By Aryaman
In Jharkhand there are 26 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and I chose JNV Bokaro and JNV Dhanbad and visited them to better understand its socio-economic impacts. Fifteen students, three teachers, and the principal of each school were interviewed with the help of a questionnaire aided by a survey. Five students from classes eight, nine, and eleven were interviewed since classes ten and twelve had their pre-board exams. The students of these classes were chosen since they had spent at least two years in the school and chosen from different classes to have variety in the sample set.
The students were confident. My observations are as following:
- Communication Skills and Multilingual Proficiency: Students were fluent in Hindi, had a commendable understanding of English and can read and write Bangla, showcasing their proficiency in a third language.
- Confidence and Thoughtful Responses: The students exhibited respect towards their peers, teachers, elders, and the interviewer. They displayed a remarkable capacity to comprehend questions swiftly and formulate thoughtful responses, often expressing their introspective thinking.
- Harmonious Interactions and Inclusivity: Students played and participated in activities together without regard for differences based on caste or gender.
- Strong Student-Teacher Relationships: The students demonstrated a deep bond with their teachers, perceiving them as integral parts of their lives. This relationship extended beyond the classroom, as the students viewed their teachers as guides who offered academic and personal support.
- Personal Growth and Empowerment: The students expressed remarkable personal growth since joining JNVs exhibiting improved behaviour and respectful communication with elders and avoiding conflicts.
- Awareness of Rights and Responsibilities: The students showed newfound awareness of their rights, facilities, and government schemes. They learned about their right to education, the significance of constitutional remedies, and the ability to legally exercise their freedom of speech.
Impact on their surroundings – The impact of the educational journey at JNVs on the students is significant and transformative. These observations underscore the valuable role of JNVs in nurturing holistic development among students, students-teachers, fostering a positive learning environment, and preparing them for a brighter future. The interviews highlighted their awareness of global issues, proactive environmental initiatives, and role as educators and mentors. The findings underscore the students’ active involvement in positively impacting their communities. JNVs provide academic and extracurricular opportunities and create a nurturing environment that allows students to thrive academically and personally. The availability of coaching opportunities provided by organisations like Aakash and Dakshana Foundation further enhances the student’s educational journey.
Conclusion: Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) emerge as beacons of academic excellence and holistic development, providing a unique opportunity for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. With classes ranging from VI to XII and offering multiple streams, JNVs nurture their students’ potential through a merit-based entrance test and a supportive environment. Their commitment to academic excellence is evident through their impressive performance in board examinations. Furthermore, integrating technology, such as innovative classes, and organizing science congresses and exhibitions contribute to fostering a research mindset among the students. In essence, JNVs empower students from disadvantaged backgrounds by offering a comprehensive educational experience. Their commitment to academic excellence, technological integration, exposure to various disciplines, and nurturing talents contribute to the holistic development of the students. JNVs serve as catalysts for change, giving students the tools to succeed academically, discover their passions, and contribute positively to their communities and society.
The students themselves articulate the immense value they place on their JNV experience, considering it a “golden opportunity” or a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.” They wholeheartedly participate in a wide range of activities, including art, dance, music, yoga, physical training, and public speaking, which may have been otherwise unavailable to them. Through this exposure, the students discover their talents and passions, and with the support of JNVs’ facilities, they can develop and nurture their skills. This is exemplified by a teacher’s daughter, who, after joining JNV, discovered her athletic talents and went on to represent the state in volleyball, relay, and basketball. Notably, legendary athlete PT Usha herself discovered her running talent in a JNV.
