JMI’s Department of Economics organizes Golden Jubilee Alumni Meet

The Department of Economics, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized its The Golden
Jubilee Alumni Meet on 17th February, 2024 at the Auditorium of Faculty of Engineering
& Technology of the university. More than150 Alumni belonging to different batches
from 1979 to 2023 overwhelmingly participated in the event. Many Alumni settled out of
Delhi and abroad also participated online through Google meet. The event also
witnessed participation of faculty members and large turnout of current batch of
students.
The inaugural function commenced with Jamia Tarana which starts with “Dayar-e-Shauq
Mera, Shehr-e-Aarzoo Mera… (This is the land of my hopes…This is the land of my
dreams…)”. Prof. Asheref Illiyan, Head of the Department, welcomed all the guests,
Faculty members, esteemed Alumni & students. He informed the audience that the
Department of Economics has completed its 50 years of glorious existence. The maiden
program of the Department i.e. B.A (Hons.) Economics was started in 1971-72. We
celebrated the Golden Jubilee with much zeal and enthusiasm last year and this alumni
meet is the last program under the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Department. He
also showcased the performance of the Department in recent time and sketched how
the Department is reaching newer heights through better Teaching-learning, research
and organization of various events including Noble Laureate Lecture Series by Prof.
Mohammad Yunus of Bangladesh. Prof. Illiyan thanked all the Alumni for their gracious
presence and support and making this event a historic, truly golden and highly
memorable.
Prof. Eqbal Hussain, Offg.Vice Chancellor, JMI and chief guest of the inaugural function,
in his inaugural address underscored the role of alumni in the growth and development
of its Alma Mater. He also exhorted the alumni that it is time to give back to the
University as the university nurtured your talent during your studies. He highlighted that
today Jamia stands among the top three universities in India along with JNU and IISc,
Bangalore.
Prof. Eqbal stressed that the glorious journey of Jamia was possible because of the
unmatched dedication and sacrifices of our founders and the values they inculcated
among the students which continues to inspire us till date.
Prof. Mohd Muslim Khan, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, JMI and Guest of Honour,
congratulated the Department for its Golden Jubilee Celebrations. He stressed the need
for mentorship by the alumni to the current batch of students. The Special guest, Prof.
Tasneem Meenai, one of the oldest alumni of the Department (1977 batch) and former
DSW, JMI narrated her experience during the initial years of the Department and she
also mentioned that the university Tarana was composed by Mohammad Khaliq
Siddiqui, who was a faculty member in the Department of Economics, JMI.
Prof. Khan Masood Ahmad, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Khawja Moinuddin Chisti Urdu, ArabiFarsi University, Lucknow, and retired Professor from the Department exposed the need
for integrating more alumni to the Department. Prof. Moonis Shakeel, Alumni
Coordinator proposed vote of thanks in the inaugural function.
Ice breaking sessions, mesmerizing and marvelous cultural performance such as singing,
urdu poetry (Shairi), classical dance, skit & Quiz competition by Ma’shiyat Network were
the peculiarity of the event. There was an all round celebration throughout the day.
Alumni shared their fond memories with the students. All the Alumni were honoured
and presented with gifts by Prof. Asheref Illiyan, HoD.
In the Valedictory session Prof. Illiyan thanked the organizing committee- Prof. Moonis
Shakeel, Dr. Md Zakaria Siddiqui (event coordinator), Dr. Vasim Akram (Student Advisor),
Dr. Mohammad Kashif Khan (Course Coordinator) and subject association led by Abid
Raza Kazmi, Ma’shiyat Network led by Labeeba Bakhtawar, Placement cell and student
Volunteers for the smooth organization of the program. The Program was wrapped up
by the vote of thanks proposed by Abid Raza Kazmi, General Secretary, Economics
Subject Association.
