Aligarh : Five-year-old Mohammad’s unbearable leg pain signaled a rare problem many couldn’t solve; but thanks to the cardiothoracic surgeons of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), he is now on the mend.

The kid went under the knife to get a rare ‘Popliteal Artery Block’ corrected, which if left untreated could have resulted in significant morbidity, loss of leg and even mortality.

“It is very rare for such young children to develop Popliteal Artery Blocks. The surgery is even more complicated as any failure would result in the loss of leg. But, thankfully the multidisciplinary teams at JNMC with their extensive expertise are able to successfully perform these procedures”, said Prof Mohd Azam Haseen (Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery) who did the surgery with his team comprising Dr Shamayal Rabbani and Dr Saif Aleem.

Dr Nadeem Raza provided the anesthesia.

Prof Azam Haseen informed: “The procedure involved an incision and using the angiogram and camera to locate the area where the artery was getting compressed. We then isolated the popliteal artery and relieved the muscle, tendon or band causing compression”.

Congratulating the team of surgeons, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said that patients from across Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country prefer JNMC for its advanced medical infrastructure, better communication, and easy access for follow-up visits.

“Our teams of doctors and surgeons review each patient’s case before coming up with a comprehensive plan for complicated procedures. JNMC is among the top notch hospitals in the Country, where these surgeries are successfully performed”, said Prof M U Rabbani (Dean, Faculty of Medicine).

Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Principal, JNCM) stressed, “JNMC is a symbol of hope as patients from the lower economic strata can get their treatments done here at very nominal costs”.

Mohammad, who has now been discharged after recovery to return back to his native Sasaram in Bihar was rushed to local physicians and many hospitals in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh by parents after suffering heavy feeling in the leg, lower leg cramping, swelling in the calf area, changes in skin color around the calf muscle and blood clots in the lower leg. There was initially an infection in his right thigh which led to injury to his main blood vessel.

He was diagnosed with Popliteal Artery Block, requiring immediate surgical procedure after a CT angiography done by Dr Mahtab Ahmed at the Department of Radiology.
