JNMC doctor presents research in Toronto
Aligarh : Prof Hammad Usmani, Department of Anaesthesiology and Consultant in-Charge, Pain Clinic, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) explained the use of Virtual Reality (VR) for reducing pain in the treatment and rehabilitation of burn injury patients.
He was presenting research work on ‘Immersive VR Therapy in Modulating Pain in Patients of Burn Injury of Hands’ at the World Congress of Pain in Toronto, Canada under the financial assistance of the International Association for Study of Pain (IASP).
“In the VR therapy, patients are immersed in the virtual world and diverted from the pain they are suffering in the underlying condition. This therapy reduces the intensity of pain and also helps in early functional recovery of patients with the facility of active and passive physiotherapy in VR”, said Prof Hammad.
Senior faculty members, Prof Qazi Ehsan Ali (Chairman, Department of Anaesthesiology), Prof Shahla Haleem and Prof Syed Moied Ahmed pointed out: “This treatment modality has shown promising results in the treatment of pain and early rehabilitation of patients suffering from traumatic and burn injury of hands, post stroke pain and neuropathic pain”.
Prof Hammad has also developed a virtual reality lab with Dr Mohd Fahud Khurram at the Pain Clinic, JNMC.
