JNMC surgeons successfully make spinal correction procedure

ALIGARH: In a challenging and rare surgery done on a 16 year-old-patient, surgeons and doctors at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University brought back a normal healthy life to the patient who had been suffering from complete loss of movement and sensation in the lower limbs due to traumatic injury and whose case had been returned by the AIIMS, New Delhi after some initial treatment.

A team of surgeons and anaesthetists at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care and Department of Neurosurgery, JN Medical College, AMU, including Dr M Tabish Khan, Dr Muazzam Hasan and Dr Atif Khalid took up the challenge and after a marathon surgery of about 8 hours and necessary post operative treatment, the patient is doing well and has been discharged to lead a normal life.

Another patient with severe scoliosis (sideways curvature of the Spine) with a total bend in the back was also operated under general anaesthesia with neuromonitoring for corrective surgery of the spine. A successful correction was made in spite of both surgical and anaesthetic challenges.

Prof Qazi Ehsan Ali (Chairman, Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care) said that the spinal deformities have been posing difficulties for surgeons and anaesthetists and it used to be considered a permanent and irreparable disability. However, the advancement in skills and equipment has proved meaningful in this field and surgeons’ efforts are now bearing fruits.
