Karlsruhe Institute of Technology Hosts The Visit Of Bettina Stark-Watzinger

Intelligent robotic technologies and systems that can support humans in a variety of tasks. Procedures that use artificial intelligence (AI) methods to bring used products into a sustainable cycle. Scientists at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are working on solutions like these. The Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger informed herself about the current status of this research today (July 28, 2023) during her summer tour during a visit to KIT.

The Federal Research Minister visited laboratories and research facilities at the Institute for Anthropomatics and Robotics of the KIT and at the wbk Institute for Production Technology of the KIT.

“AI is a key technology that offers huge opportunities for our economy and for our society. Robotics is the pinnacle of AI. The big challenge is the integration of AI into robotic systems, especially if this is to be implemented quickly, cost-effectively and ethically. This is also where our research funding comes in, in order to bring robotic systems safely into demanding applications. KIT makes an important contribution here,” said Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger.

“The methods of artificial intelligence open up great opportunities for us. At KIT, we use them in humanoid robotics and for industrial production, among other things, in order to support people in direct interaction,” says Professor Oliver Kraft, Vice President Research at KIT. “We are aware of the responsibility for people, think about possible risks and deal intensively with ethical questions about artificial intelligence and the use of robots in private environments.”

“When it comes to AI and possible applications, it is always about the perspective of the people who use these systems and technologies. At KIT, we are particularly committed to dialogue with society,” says Professor Thomas Hirth, Vice President Transfer and International Affairs at KIT. “An outstanding example of this is the real laboratory for robotic AI, in which we conduct research in real environments and in exchange with the users.”
