Karolyi selected as new dean of SC Johnson College of Business
Andrew Karolyi, acting dean of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business since Kevin F. Hallock stepped down March 4, will serve as dean of the college for the remainder of Hallock’s term, Provost Michael Kotlikoff has announced.
The Cornell University Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee approved the appointment April 8. Karolyi’s term will end June 30, 2024.

Karolyi is also the college’s dean of academic affairs, and the Harold Bierman Jr. Distinguished Professor of Management in the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management.
“I am honored and grateful to serve as the next dean of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business,” Karolyi said, “and have the opportunity to continue to work with this incredible community to keep us moving forward, advancing as a college.”
There were several outstanding reasons for appointing Karolyi to fill out Hallock’s term, Kotlikoff said.
“Andrew is an extraordinary scholar, leader and strategic thinker who is internationally respected for his research contributions,” he said. “Having served as the deputy dean for nearly three years, there is no one more familiar with the initiatives and challenges facing the college.”
Karolyi said one of his main priorities will be fostering a sense of community and belonging at the college.
“To reach new heights, we need to be recognized as a place where people want to work, study and exchange ideas,” he said. “Our college is stronger together. I truly believe we need a renewed focus toward building a culture that is inclusive, that is respectful of our diversity of views, and that draws upon the wisdom of our individual voices.”
A collaborative community is one of the college’s key strengths, he said. “Faculty, staff, students and alumni are always ready to step up and meet the challenges we face. I am inspired by them and so very proud to be a part of this community.”
Karolyi added that he is excited about leading a college “at the forefront of developing principled business leaders who value shared prosperity, their impact on the world and putting people first.
“Our faculty are the world’s thought leaders on some of the most pressing global challenges for business and society,” he said. “This is how we at Cornell will lead the way forward in business education.”
