King’s College Continues Its Winning Streak at 2023 Moot Competitions
Last year during the 2022 Moot Competition season, King’s students enjoyed record success. In 2023, students extended this tradition by continuing to dominate in competitions and proving themselves to be a force to be reckoned with.
LSE Featherstone Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Moot, 24-25 February 2023
King’s students won the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Featherstone Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Moot early in February 2023, winning against Oxford University. Impressively, King’s students represented two teams who advanced to the semi-finals.
Ines Coron, Nizar Cano, Neha Vasagiri and Olivia Campbell-Cavendish reached the semi-finals, and Barnaby Potts and Amn Bashir were part of the winning team. Olivia Campbell-Cavendish also went on to win the Georgia Lassoff Spirit of the Competition Award.
The team was coached by Jocelyn Bosse and John Enman-Beech.
The LSE-Featherstone Moot competition was inaugurated in 2016 as a forum for law students to refine their advocacy skills whilst engaging with issues in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity.
Learning more about sexual orientation and gender identity issues and their interfaces with the law has been an unforgettable experience.

International Day of Crisis, 3-4 March 2023
King’s College London students successfully participated in the Day of Crisis Competition, organised by the Hague Academy of International Law. The team, named King’s Crisis Lawyers navigated a series of international crises through written and oral proceedings, as well as negotiations. King’s Crisis Lawyers comprised of LLM students Olivia Arana Figueroa, Nur Fatin Hafiza Hasham, Ernestina Knell, Leon Ngiam Chong Wen and Gianfranco Smith.
Facing eleven other teams from world-leading academic institutions and the International Court of Justice, the team was awarded first prize for negotiations and came second in both the first day of the competition and the plenary final. Their performance continues the strong record of The Dickson Poon School of Law in the competition.
The Day of Crisis Moot Competition was founded in 2012 by Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin. It is a unique event that simulates a major international crisis and challenges teams to deal with the unfolding events over 24 hours. The final, hosted at the premises of the Peace Palace in The Hague, consisted of plenary presentations and negotiations in a simulated international forum, where teams discussed a proposed international treaty on the protection of the marine environment from plastic pollution.
The team was coached by Mark Konstantinidis and Franka Pues and received academic advice from Dr Niccolò Ridi and Professor Philippa Webb.
Sports Arbitration Moot, 22 April 2023
The King’s team was awarded the Best Appellant Second Runner-up in the Sports Arbitration Moot, 2023, organised in collaboration with FIFA, the Swiss Arbitration Academy, and the University of Neuchatel. The Moot was hosted by the Madrid International Arbitration Centre.
The King’s team, which comprised of Asher Kaul, Riya Rathi, Shweta Khot, and Simran Chahal made it to the quarterfinals in the competition that saw the participation of law schools from thirty countries across all seven continents.
Shweta Khot won the Best Oralist award in the individual award category.
The team competed in three general rounds in March and qualified for the final rounds of the top sixteen with an international rank of six. The final rounds took place in Madrid, Spain on April 27-28, 2023.
The team was coached by Ms. Shobana Iyer, FCIArb and Barrister, and was supported by The Dickson Poon School of Law. Dr. Manuel Penades Fons mentored the team as the ancillary coach.
Frankfurt International Investment Arbitration Moot, 27- 30 June 2023
Students from The Dickson Poon School of Law achieved an impressive rank in the 15th edition of the Frankfurt International Investment Arbitration Moot 2023. They successfully secured a commendable position in the competition coming in at an impressive rank of 12th place overall out of 66 teams.
The team comprised of Daria Popa, Aneeka Dhaliwal, and Douglas Tam, and were navigated with guidance and coaching from Prateek Sharma.
The competition presented participants with a challenging and thought-provoking experience, as they delved into novel and complex questions which pushed the team to enhance their understanding and expertise in investment arbitration.
The team felt that the experience enriched their legal education and has further motivated them to pursue excellence in the field of investment arbitration.
