King’s College London: IPS colleagues win major awards at international PharmSci conference
Colleagues from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IPS) made a splash at the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (APS) international pharmaceutical science conference earlier this month by claiming major awards, prestigious recognition and projecting a strong presence through invited podium and poster presentations.
Professor Stuart Jones (Director of the Centre for Pharmaceutical Medicine Research at King’s College London) was the recipient of the APS Science award, which showcases an individual who has demonstrated an internationally excellent contribution to pharmaceutical science.
Professor Jones’s APS Science award plenary talk was titled ‘Integrating Pharmaceutical Medicine with Pharmaceutical Science and Clinical Pharmacology to Expediate Global Medicines Development’. He was also recognised as a fellow of the APS which is the highest and most prestigious honour awarded by the APS to members each year in recognition of their contribution to the Academy and their accomplishment and impact in any sector of the pharmaceutical sciences.
Dr Bahijja Raimi-Abraham was the receipt of the Emerging Scientist award, which recognises researchers with no more than 10 years’ experience since the award of their PhD who have an outstanding track record, indicative of excellent potential. Dr Raimi-Abraham’s talk was titled “A Three-Way Approach to Tackle Infectious Diseases–What worked, what didn’t, and lessons learnt…”
I am honoured to be the 2022 recipient of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences Emerging Scientist award. I am grateful for the recognition of my efforts and impact in research, innovation, education and scientific outreach within the Pharmaceutical Sciences. Winning this award has provided me with additional motivation and focus moving forward.

Professor Miraz Rahman was an invited speaker to the conference’s inaugural antimicrobials session, which was also co-chaired by Dr Bahijja Raimi-Abraham. Professor Miraz Rahman, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, gave a talk titled ‘Innovations in Developing Antimicrobials in the Age of Antimicrobial Resistance’ in a scientific session titled ‘Antimicrobial: Rethinking Antimicrobials in a Post Pandemic World’ which was co-chaired by Professor Brendan Gilmore of Queen’s University Belfast and Dr Raimi-Abraham.
A group of IPS students also presented work at the conference, including Naveed Ahmad, Aleksandra Olszewska, Marey Almaghrabi, Mazen Saber Aly and Qing Guo.
I was personally very honoured to present the APS Science Award Lecture and receive an APS fellowship. The Association of Pharmaceutical Science (APS) Conference held in Belfast demonstrated the continued strength of pharmaceutical research across the UK. It highlighted the excellent relationship between academics and members pharmaceutical industry in this sector and its scientific programme provided a numerous excellent examples of pharmaceutical scientific discoveries leading to true societal and economic impact.
