King’s College London: King’s academics elected to Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering
The Royal Academy of Engineering has announced the election of 60 new Fellows, four International Fellows and five Honorary Fellows.
Two King’s engineers, Professor Sebastien Ourselin and Professor Jian Dai, are among the new Fellows, together with Visiting Professor Simon Saunders.
Our Fellows represent the best of the best in the engineering world, and we welcome these 69 excellent and talented professionals to our community of business people, entrepreneurs, innovators and academics

The vision of King’s College London is to make the world a better place. Engineers working across the university are finding new ways of solving issues in many spheres of life, with Jian and Seb both contributing to better health care.
Newly elected Fellow, Professor Jian Dai from the Department of Engineering, is a pioneer in reconfigurable mechanisms and robots, in origami robots, in ankle rehabilitation robots and in metamorphic robots. Commenting on his election, he said:
“I am pleased to be elected to a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. I am glad that metamorphic mechanisms and reconfigurable mechanisms have now thrived across the world in both research and practice and I thank my numerous former PhD students, colleagues and friends for helping put our research into practice and in industries. “
Professor Sebastien Ourselin leads the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences. He added:
“I am extremely honoured to have been elected and recognised by my peers. Over my career, I have been driven to bring patient-centric engineering research and innovation into medicine. This can only be achieved through co-creation between academia, industry and the NHS. I have been very fortunate to work with highly skilled and passionate colleagues across all sectors where, together, our ambition has been to make a difference to society.”
Professor Ajay Shah, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine said:
“I am delighted with Professor Seb Ourselin’s election as Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, alongside that of Professor Jian Dai. This recognition is a testament to outstanding achievements to engineer better health, a core objective of the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences. Seb’s work and that of the School is generating substantial patient benefits by driving healthcare engineering innovation, working in close partnership with clinicians across King’s Health Partners and with strategic commercial partners. His inspirational stewardship of the School is also the driving force for the burgeoning MedTech Hub that promises to deliver even greater clinical innovation and benefits.”
The Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences, Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, added:
” I congratulate Professor Jian Dai and Professor Seb Ourselin on their significant and lasting contributions to engineering design and better health outcomes, which have been recognised through their election to the Royal Academy of Engineering. There is no higher distinction for an engineer and the election of two King’s Professors as Fellows to the Royal Academy in one year, alongside that of Professor Simon Saunders, Visiting Professor in the Department of Engineering, is testament to the quality, impact and standing of King’s Engineering.”
