King’s College London to get AI expertise to The Alan Turing Institute
The Alan Turing Institute has launched the Turing University Network as a new way of working with universities across the UK. It is also part of the Institute’s new strategy aimed at using data science and artificial intelligence (AI) for social good.
As one of 36 universities joining the network, King’s will benefit from the Institute’s higher education, industry and government partners – all of which are working to generate real-world impact through data science and AI research.
We’re delighted to launch a new UK-wide university network of data science and AI expertise via the Turing University Network. The network is crucial to successful delivery of the Institute Strategy, enables our role as a national convenor in the data science and AI landscape, and creates opportunity for meaningful collaboration where interests align across research and innovation, skills, and engagement.
– Donna Brown, Director of Academic Engagement at The Alan Turing Institute.
With a wealth of AI expertise across a breadth of disciplines, King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence launched last year, inviting students and academics to contribute to scientific and technological developments as well as to legal, societal and ethical studies.
King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence also aims to engage researchers with policymakers and the general public and provide a transparent scientific analysis of developments that affect our lives, now and in the future.
Joining the Turing University Network will connect King’s across the national data science and AI ecosystem, positioning King’s to better collaborate, showcase and promote its data science and AI activity, as well as to influence the national agenda. I’m delighted that, building on earlier work as part of last year’s Turing Network Development Award, the King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence will lead activity on collaboration with the Alan Turing Institute via the network.
– Professor Michael Luck, Director of King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence.
It is great news that King’s will be joining the Turing University Network. The success of our application recognises King’s proven track record and future plans in scientific and translational research in AI and data science. Working with the Alan Turing Institute’s extended network will open up new and exciting collaborative research and innovations opportunities for our academics and researchers.
– Professor Bashir M. Al-Hashimi CBE FREng, Vice President (Research & Innovation).
The Alan Turing Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954), whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing are considered to be the key disciplines comprising the emerging field of data science and artificial intelligence (AI).
Five founding universities – Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL and Warwick – and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council created The Alan Turing Institute in 2015.
In 2018, eight more universities – Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Queen Mary University of London, Birmingham, Exeter, Bristol, Southampton – were named partner universities.
The Alan Turing Institute is funded through grants from Research Councils, university partners and from strategic and other partnerships.
