King’s College London’s Black Engineers Programme Shortlisted for 2024 Engineering Talent Awards
The programme’s working group is one of six finalists in the University Engineering Team of the Year category. The Engineering Talent Awards is a national set of awards that celebrates the diversity of the engineering and technology professions.
Success for Black Engineers is a collaborative project between the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences and the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences designed to support aspiring Black engineers at school and university.
Jointly spearheaded by Professor Kawal Rhode and Dr Ernest Kamavuako and coordinated by Sophie Rust, the project was put together in consultation with Black postgraduate and undergraduate students at the School.
I am so thrilled that our working group has been shortlisted for this award. Our project aims to increase the representation of Black students in engineering at King’s and to support students to achieve top results and have the best possible university experience. Everyone in the group has gone above and beyond to help achieve this vision, and I’m really glad the impact of this work is being showcased on a national level so we can inspire others to implement similar initiatives.
Ms Sophie Rust, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator, School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences
The Engineering Talent Awards, powered by EqualEngineers in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering and Metro News, aim to raise the profile of the engineering and technology professions across the UK and highlight diversity in engineering on a national platform.
It is so deserving that the Success for Black Engineers Team has been recognised for its great work on supporting underrepresented students. The project is an amazing example of the success that occurs when staff and students co-create and co-deliver.
Professor Kawal Rhode, Head of Education, School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences
