King’s College London’s MSc Clinical Sciences Programmes Earn Accreditation from IPEM
MSc Clinical Sciences Clinical Engineering led by course director Dr Adam Shortland and MSc Clinical Sciences Medical Physics led by course director Prof Kawal Rhode, are NHS-sponsored courses that form part of the national Scientist Training Programme.
The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences deliver training and education for approximately 60 trainee clinical scientists per year. This greatly supports the UK NHS hospital workforce.
Accredited programmes strengthen degrees and support employability, as employers can recognise the high standards of education associated with accreditation. Accreditation also allows students to gain professional body registration which enables access to networks and facilities.
The process of becoming accredited involves presenting all documents associated with the programmes to a panel of three experts for review and scrutiny. The process takes one day for each course and involves interviews with the course director, the teachers, the students and the course administrators. There is also an inspection of the programmes’ teaching and learning facilities.
The accreditation process is a huge team effort. I would like to recognise the contributions of Miss Antonia Pontiki and Miss Anita Fisher, who carried out the organisation of the visits; our colleagues in the NHS who teach on the these courses and were available for interview – Dr David Eaton, Dr David Gallacher, Prof Steve Keevil, Dr Gill Clarke, Dr Jonathan Noble and Dr Didi Akinluyi; all of our NHS Scientist Training Programme students who went out of their ways to be available for the panels; and finally Dr Adam Shortland and Dr Lefteris Livieratos our current and out-going course directors, respectively.
