Koen Van Gerven Appointed Chairman of UZ Leuven Board of Directors
On 1 September 2024, Koen Van Gerven will become the new chairman of the board of directors of UZ Leuven. He will take over from professor Mark Waer, who has fulfilled the role with great dedication since 1 October 2018.
The Board of Directors of KU Leuven nominated Koen Van Gerven as a candidate to the Board of Trustees of KU Leuven. The Board of Trustees accepted the nomination today, Thursday 4 July, and appointed Koen Van Gerven.Koen Van Gerven graduated as a commercial and business economics engineer from KU Leuven and obtained an MBA from Cornell University in the United States. He started his career in 1982 at Generale Bank, which later merged into Fortis Bank (now BNP Paribas Fortis). He worked there for 19 years in various areas such as the branch network, marketing, strategy, ICT and general management.
In 2001 he joined Acerta, where he was CEO until the end of 2006 and successfully guided a major transformation and merger movement.
In 2006, he moved to bpost (then De Post) where he became a member of the management committee. He was the architect of the transformation of the post office network and later CIO. In 2014, he succeeded Johnny Thijs as CEO, a position he held until 2020.
Koen Van Gerven joined the management committee of UZ Leuven in 2016.
Professor Wim Robberecht will also become a member of the management committee again from 1 October, when he ends his term as CEO of UZ Leuven and retires. Prof. Dr. Wim Robberecht was already a member of the management committee from 2005 to 2018 and was chairman from August 2016 to October 2018.
