Kyushu University Hosts Visit from 2023 Physics Nobel Prize Chair, Prof. Eva Olsson
On March 21, 2024, Professor Eva Olsson from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden (hereinafter referred to as Prof. Olsson) visited Kyushu University.
Prof. Olsson, a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, chaired the selection committee for last year’s Nobel Prize in Physics, announcing the winners and their research on “attosecond pulses” to the world from Stockholm. In addition, she serves as the President of the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy (IFSM), a research community that has produced a large number of prominent researchers.
On March 21, Prof. Olsson had a meeting with Professor Aya Hagishima, Vice President for Research of Kyushu University, Dr. Motoji Yamamoto, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and her long-term collaborators Professor Emeritus Syo Matsumura and Professor Kenji Kaneko.
After the meeting, she delivered a keynote presentation at the workshop “Workshop of Advanced Microscopy and Microanalysis”, organized by Professor Yasukazu Murakami, the director of the Ultramicroscopy Research Center. The center has been working to continue and develop academic collaboration with Prof. Olsson, resulting in her invitation to host the session.
In her lecture, she not only presented the latest research results in her field of microprobe manipulation in transmission electron microscopy and evaluation of nanomaterials’ structure and properties, but she also discussed the relationship between Swedish society and the Nobel Prize, as well as the history of Chalmers University of Technology.
Following her keynote lecture, the workshop continued with a Young Scientists Session, where young scientists working with electron microscopy presented their latest research results. The session became quite lively, largely due to Prof. Olsson’s Encouragement. She posed questions and made comments to all the speakers. After the workshop, the networking session also provided a great opportunity for further exchanges between Prof. Olsson and researchers at Kyushu University.
Based on our long-term vision “VISION 2030,” Kyushu University aims to become a hub of international talent circulation through institution-level international collaborations, and to foster future leaders in the international community. Prof. Olsson’s visit this time was very meaningful for our international exchange and for the revitalization of research and education. We will continue to promote international exchange opportunities with various stakeholders within the university to nurture future leaders.
