La Trobe University Mildura campus graduation celebrations held
La Trobe University’s commitment to providing access to higher education opportunities for regional students has come to fruition, with the graduation of 58 students from its Mildura campus, including three PhDs.
The celebration has seen students entering the workforce with a wide range of degrees from Education (Primary and Secondary Teaching), Social Work, Nursing, Accounting, Health Sciences, Arts and Early Childhood Education.
PhD graduate and local paramedic Brodie Thomas will deliver a personal address at the ceremony to all of the graduates. Brodie’s thesis examined interventions for workplace violence in emergency care.
La Trobe Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Susan Dodds, expressed delight at the graduating Mildura cohort.
“We all feel great pride in the 58 students graduating today and look forward to the ongoing contribution they will make to their local communities,” Professor Dodds said.
“The class of 2022 has left an indelible mark on La Trobe University, and we are grateful for the contributions they have made during their time here.”
La Trobe Mildura has graduated more than 1500 students, with 2023 a special year for the campus as it celebrates 20 years of the standalone site, the Brian Grogan building.
Sandy Connor, Mildura Head of Campus, said the graduation is momentous for the University but also for the local community.
“La Trobe University is committed to providing access to higher education here in Mildura, and seeing our students walk across the graduation stage is a very proud moment for us all,” Sandy Connor said.
“Most of our students are now using their qualifications locally to work as nurses, social workers, accountants, kindergarten, primary and secondary teachers. The conferral of PhDs to our students is also an exceptionally proud moment for our Mildura campus.
“These students have shown true resilience throughout their study, experiencing the pandemic and some being impacted by the recent flooding,” Sandy Connor said.
A number of Mildura graduates, including Brodie Thomas and the other PhD graduates, are available for media interviews and photos after the ceremony from 2.30pm on the 28th.
