Lancaster University: 50th Anniversary Annual Conference of the British Society of Gerontology
Lancaster University is to host online the 50th Anniversary Annual Conference of the British Society of Gerontology from July 7-9 2021.
This year’s theme is ‘Ageing Past, Present and Future: Innovation and Change’ and so far there have been 340 paper presentations, 36 symposia and 58 posters submitted with more than 250 delegates already registered.
Professor Carol Holland, Director of the Centre for Ageing Research and Chair of the conference planning committee is very pleased that the BSG conference is ‘virtually’ coming to Lancaster University, especially for its special 50th anniversary event.
She said: “As the UK’s premier multidisciplinary conference for the promotion of gerontological research, our delegates will hear about cutting-edge research, connect with researchers from multi-disciplinary fields, and meet key stakeholders and sponsors.
“We are also working hard to create the usual conference fringe and social events, which amongst other activities will include live yoga sessions and a special BSG pets online meeting!”

The Demonisation of Older Women: Alison Findlay
With her interest in the lives and portrayal of women in the 1600s, Alison will share her interest in the historical (or maybe not…) demonization of older women and witch persecution, with a focus on the local trial of the Pendle witches.
Blue Zones: a model for our ageing society? Michel Poulain
Michel Poulain introduced the concept of Blue Zones when identifying an area with exceptional longevity area the mountains of Sardinia. He will share the lessons of the Blue Zones and his ongoing search for new Blue Zones.
The Benefits of Narrational Relationships in the Lives of Older Adults: Sandra Hirst
Sandra Hirst has held several leadership positions in gerontology, including president of the Canadian Association on Gerontology, which will also be celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2021. She will share her passion for the stories of older adults and the learning acquired from listening to them.
