Lancaster University: Anniversary of the Lancaster/Sunway partnership marked by British-Malaysia Business Excellence Award

Lancaster has won the UK-Malaysia Education Institutional Partnership Award for its partnership with Sunway University. The award was presented on 26 May, shortly before the senior team from Sunway University were welcomed onto campus to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Lancaster/Sunway partnership.

The outstanding partnership award recognises a UK higher or further education institution that has partnered with a Malaysian organisation to deliver significant impact and value to the education sector in Malaysia. The award was collected by Professor Andrew Abbott Academic Dean, (Lancaster University at Sunway) at a ceremony in Sunway City, presented by Richard Graham MP, UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Malaysia. The awards were attended by His Excellency Charles Hay MVO, British High Commissioner to Malaysia and the Malaysian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.

Professor Elizabeth Lee (CEO Sunway Education Group), Professor Sibrandes Poppema, (President Sunway University), Professor Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam, (Provost Sunway University) and Mr Danial Rahman Abdullah, (Director, Office of the CEO Sunway Education Group) joined the Vice-Chancellor Professor Andy Schofield and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Guy at Lancaster University to plant a commemorative anniversary tree on 27 May.

Since launching in 2006, the partnership with Sunway has grown to become the largest of Lancaster’s international strategic partnerships, and, according to 2020-21 HESA data, is the largest UK transnational educational partnership of its kind in Malaysia.

There are currently over 5,600 students enrolled on twenty-seven programmes of study leading to Lancaster University and Sunway University certificates.

The 15th anniversary sees the launch of 20 new student mobility scholarships which will support increased exchange between Sunway and Lancaster – this will make Sunway Lancaster’s largest exchange partner.

Around one third of Lancaster’s global undergraduate community study outside of the UK, at one of our strategic partnerships in China, Malaysia, Ghana, and Germany.
