Lancaster University: Lancaster University School of Architecture supports the ‘Best of the Lakes’

Representatives from Lancaster University’s School of Architecture were special guests at the launch of an exciting new exhibition at the weekend.

Second year students (the School’s inaugural cohort), along with Head of Architecture Des Fagan, attended the ‘Best of the Lakes’ launch at the Brewery Arts, Kendal.

The School of Architecture has worked closely with, and has supported, organisers of the architectural competition and Head of School of Architecture Professor Ruth Dalton was part of the judging panel.

The new exhibition, Best of the Lakes, shows how local architects are meeting the challenge of good design in the unique landscape setting of the Lake District.

The competition has been organised by The Lancaster and Westmorland Society of Architects (LAWSA) and the Cumberland Society of Architects (CSA) in partnership with the Lake District National Park Authority.

The exhibition celebrates architecture by local architects, showcasing selected projects that display excellence in design, sustainability and conservation.

President of LAWSA Simon Blunden said: “After the long, challenging months that the pandemic has presented, we are delighted to showcase the high quality of design, ingenuity and sensitivity to the spectacular context of the National Park that has been achieved by our local architects, their clients, and the skilled contractors with which they have worked.

“We look forward to inspiring the public with this fantastic exhibition, one that demonstrates the range and quality of gifted local designers.”

Professor Dalton added: “It was such a pleasure to be asked to judge this exciting competition, showcasing the very best of our local architects. It was such an inspiration for our students to be invited to see the winning entries.”
