Lancaster University: NIHR Health and Care Research Award for Lancaster
Lancaster University has won an award at the NIHR Greater Manchester Health and Care Research Awards 2022 for an end-of-life advance care planning project.
The awards celebrate those who have delivered high quality research studies over the past year, with almost 200 nominations.
The award for Collaborative Working Accomplishment is for the development of an online Advance Care Planning Support training resource.
The resource was developed by the International Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster University, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust and Pennine Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Groups to support health care providers in having advance care planning (ACP) discussions with people approaching the end of their lives.
Professor Nancy Preston, Co-Director in the International Observatory on End-of-Life Care at Lancaster University, said: “Collaboration is at the heart of research. It was a real honour to work with our local clinicians to further this research and importantly we have maintained the collaboration through new research projects.”
The online resource was launched in June 2022 and is available on the internet by open access.
The training covers key issues in advance care planning; hints and tips for when and how to have these discussions; and addresses advance care planning in emergency care situations. The training is recommended for all health care staff (clinical or non-clinical) as all are likely to come into contact with people approaching the end of their lives at some point, and there is a need for a coordinated approach to future care. https://www.acpsupport.co.uk/
The award was presented by Emma Lowe, Head of Research Policy for Clinical Research and Growth, at the Department of Health and Social Care, at a ceremony hosted by the NIHR Clinical Research Network Greater Manchester at The Etihad Stadium.
Sarah Fallon, Chief Operating Officer for NIHR Clinical Research Network Greater Manchester, said: “It was a pleasure for CRN Greater Manchester to host this event to recognise the outstanding achievements made across our network over the past year.
“The standard of all our finalists was exceptionally high and the stories we heard about all of their successes, across such a range of delivery models and settings, highlighted the amazing research community we’re so lucky to have in Greater Manchester, East Cheshire and East Lancashire.”
