New Delhi: Centre for Civil Society, in partnership with FICCI, is hosting the launch of ‘From Narasimha Rao to Narendra Modi’ authored by Swaminathan Aiyar, published by Times Group Books. The book will be launched by Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, at FICCI on 24 March 2017 at 6.30 pm.
The launch will be preceded by a panel discussion on ‘25 Years of Economic Reforms: From Liberalisation to Demonetisation’. Panelists will include SwaminathanAiyar, Journalist and Columnist, Swaminomics; SwapanDasgupta, Journalist and Rajya Sabha MP; Praveen Chakravarty, Senior Fellow, IDFC Institute; BimalJalan, Rajya Sabha MP and Former RBI Governor; and Sidharth K. Birla, Former President, FICCI and currently Chairman, Xpro India Limited. The speakers will discuss the progress India has made in the 25 years since the economic reforms of 1991, and the future agenda that will make India truly liberalised.
Mr.Aiyar’s book explores India’s transition from elephant to tiger in the last 25 years. India used to be called the world’s biggest beggar for foreign aid, and is now poised to become a potential super-power.But despite being the fastest growing major economy in the world, the euphoria over fast growth has faded with public outrage over corruption, dismal government services of every kind, and sectarian tensions. The 25 years from Narasimha Rao to Narendra Modi have been an era of private sector success, government failure, and eroding institutions. New controls and permits have emerged even as old ones have been abolished. The future agenda must include deeper economic reform to make India truly liberalised, an overhaul of all government services to improve quality and accountability, and strong independent institutions that promote merit over political connections.
