Aligarh: Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize awardee, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumnus and renowned scientist, Prof Rajeev Kumar Varshney discussed the road ahead in the study of genetic compositions, structures and functions of plant genome.

He was delivering the University Extension Lecture on ‘Plant Genomics: Present, Past and Future’ of the Department of Botany, AMU on December 17.

Prof Rajeev pressed the need for stress tolerant gene in major food crops for enhanced production to feed the increasing population and pointed out that this can be achieved through specific gene incorporation resistant to various types of stresses, disease resistant, nutritional and yield enhancing genes.

He shared how food and nutrition security can be improved by assembling genomes, developing genomic resources and integrating genomic technologies in crop improvement programs.

Prof Rajeev also spoke about applied genomics, molecular breeding, comparative and functional genomics, crop biotechnology, enomic and germplasm architecture of crops, strengthening of seed systems and the next-generation sequencing technologies and platforms.

Prof Ghazala Parveen (Chairperson, Department of Botany) delivered the welcome address and Prof Anwar Shahzad (Programme Convenor) extended the vote of thanks.

Munzila Mehdi conducted the programme.

Faculty members, research scholars and postgraduate students of life sciences, agriculture, and medicine attended the lecture.
