Lecture on Swachhata and related activities held

Aligarh Under the Swachhata Pakhwada, the national initiative to foster a cleaner, greener and healthier India, the Centre of Continuing and Adult Education and Extension (CCAEE), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organised a lecture on Swachhata (cleanliness), by Dr. Ali Jafer Abedi, University Health Officer, AMU.

Explaining the interconnection between cleanliness and health, Dr Abedi said cleanliness enhances physical, mental, and spiritual health. He delineated measures necessary for taking care of hygiene, emphasising that “if you are clean, you can fight off and prevent many diseases, especially communicable diseases.”

“The simple action of washing hands with water and soap reduces the chances of diarrheal diseases by up to 50%. In fact, the major cause of food borne diseases is contaminated hands. Unclean places are home to several hazardous allergies, infections, and germs”, he said.

He urged the students to wash hands before cooking and handling food. “From our restrooms and other rooms in the house and workplace, clothes, study table to dining table, cleanliness is crucial everywhere”, he reiterated.

A cleanliness drive also took place at the Centre premises.

Dr Shamim Akhtar, Director, CCAEE proposed a vote of thanks.

The Department of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology observed Swachhata Hi Seva, bringing together faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students in a collective effort towards cleanliness.

The Chairman, Dr. Z. R. Azaz Ahmad Azad said the attendees also took part in cleaning the surroundings of the Department.
