Lecture on Water Conservation

Aligarh : Prof Mohd Masroor Alam, Department of Civil Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) encouraged faculty members, students and residents of the city to more stringently practice water conservation.

He was delivering a special lecture on ‘Water Conservation’ to mark the ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ and ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ observations of the Department of Linguistics, AMU.

Spreading awareness on the importance of ‘Catch the Rain Campaign’, Prof Alam stressed the need for creating appropriate rain water harvesting structures suitable to the climatic conditions and sub-soil strata.

“People at the grassroots must be engaged for successful implementation of the ‘Catch the Rain Campaign. This drive is a significant part of the strategic interventions for trapping rainwater to increase water catchment and storage, restoration of wetlands, rejuvenation of rivulets and rivers”, he said.

Prof Alam also discussed the use of Aquifer, the saturated medium to hold and permeate water and how it is different from Aquitard and Aquiclude which permeate water at slow rates.

“Water conservation as a practice for efficiently preserving, controlling, and managing water resources has become an essential practice across the globe, but there is still a need for raising awareness on the practical and environment-friendly approaches to conserve water. The Government of India initiative of ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ is promoting water conservation and water resource management with an overwhelming response”, said Prof M J Warsi (Chairman, Department of Linguistics).

Dr Pallav Vishnu conducted the program and extended the vote of thanks.
