Leiden University: Work starts on Kolffpad student complex in Leiden
Work started today on the Kolffpad student complex, with 289 flats for students from Leiden University. Stichtnig DUWO will own the building and the University owns the site at the Bio Science Park. The building should be complete by mid-2023.
Kolffpad will be a large, sustainable student complex with 289 self-contained student flats. The complex will be built in the Schilperoort Park on the Bio Science Park. This site belongs to Leiden University and the building will to student accomodation provider DUWO. Students from the University will be able to rent out the flats from 2023.
Over 85% of the flats will cost between € 320 en € 360 to rent after housing benefit has been deducted. The other flats will be somewhat larger and will cost €375 per month after housing benefit has been deducted.
Green building
The building will have green walls and a green roof that buffers rainwater, purifies the air and keeps the building cool. There will be insect hotels in the roof and nesting boxes for birds and bats in the walls. But more will be done to make sure the building is sustainable: high insulation levels, energy efficient ventilation and solar panels. The building won’t be connected to the gas grid but will be connected to the district heating network.
Students provide input
Kolffpad was designed by Klunder Architects from Rotterdam In workshops students gave input on what they find important: room to study in combination with plenty of games, furniture that is easy to move around and good coffee. There will be three communal rooms, including a study café and a game and playroom. Waal Bouw will build the flats.
