Leiden University’s New Humanities Living Room Makes It Like ‘Home’
Playing a game, picking a cutting for your room or just having a cup of coffee: it is all possible in the new Humanities Living Room in the Matthias de Vrieshof. From Wednesday 17 May, staff and students will be able to meet informally and socialise here.
The Humanities Living Room fulfils the need for a ‘living room feeling’ at the faculty. In an earlier brainstorming session on student welfare, it turned out that both staff and students wanted a space where relaxation was central, in order to create a ‘feeling of home’ at the university. The old Noord coffee room has therefore been transformed into a cosy living room, with space for informal meetings.
Interior design
Apart from new furniture, the room has been given a homely touch. The art on display has a clear humanities flavour: all works were made by students or staff members. The Living Room also has a lounge, games corner and coffee table. Permanent initiatives such as a ‘free stuff cabinet’ and a cutting table for plants give the room even more of a homely feel.
Already in use
The new Living Room will be officially opened in the new academic year, but is already in use. You can also reserve the Living Room for small events and gatherings, such as a games afternoon, a high tea or a painting workshop.
