1st and 2nd year undergraduate students of the Institute of Economics and Law and the Institute of History, Political and Social Sciences take an active part in various activities within the framework of the project “Facing Global Challenges”, headed by the teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages ​​of Humanities L.N. … Yusupova, O. M. Sherekhova, T.M. Tartar.
The project, carried out in English, aims to engage the public, as well as vocational and secondary school students in global issues.

Students of the 1st and 2nd courses of the “Economics” direction studied the information and prepared reports on the idea of ​​sustainable development through the prism of the “green economy”, which does not imply the consumption of the Earth’s resources for obtaining financial profit, but opens up opportunities for human activities in balance with nature.

2nd year students of historical and cultural tourism of the Institute of History, Political and Social Sciences held a number of round table meetings, highlighting the issue of ecotourism in global and local significance for our republic. The sophomores touched upon both the potential for the development of this type of tourism in Karelia and the environmental problems associated with them. The discussion focused on the report of Angelica Starikova about the eco-disaster at one of the most mysterious tourist sites in Karelia – Vottovaar.

Law students of the 2nd year presented their vision of solving global problems, the starting point of which was the fight against corruption. They shared their ideas with bachelors of other areas of training during joint meetings and discussions.

After studying global problems within the framework of the “Foreign Language” course in the first semester of the 2020/21 academic year, students of the Institute of History, Political and Social Sciences and the Institute of Economics and Law took an active part in collecting waste paper. In the second semester, students of the Institute of Economics and Law joined the action of helping animals from the shelter, conducted by the Institute of Foreign Languages. Students expressed interest in a deeper study of the topic from the point of view of their specialization.

A new round of the project is to attract a wide audience to global problems. As a result of the first stage, students presented vivid video projects, digital stories and presentations, the best of which were posted on the project’s YouTube channel . Students’ video projects highlight sustainable development goals, the relationship between global warming and the economy, ecotourism, corruption, overpopulation and gender inequality.

Contributing to the solution of sustainable development goals, highlighting global problems using local examples and taking real actions to solve global problems are the main tasks of the project, the implementation of which is carried out by PetrSU students in English as the language of global communication.
