Manipal Law School Inaugurates Legal Aid Clinic to Provide Access to Justice for Underprivileged Communities

Bengaluru : To provide students with more industry experience and to extend legal support to larger communities, Manipal Law School (MLS), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Bengaluru, launched their Legal Aid Clinic on March 25th, 2023. The ceremony took place at the MLS campus at Yelahanka and the clinic was inaugurated by Hon’ble Justice B Veerappa, Judge, High Court of Karnataka as the Chief Guest who also inaugurated the clinic.

The Legal Aid Clinic aims to provide legal assistance to the underprivileged and marginalized sections of society who are unable to afford legal services. MLS students, under the supervision of faculty members and legal experts, will provide the services to the community.

Speaking at the event, Hon’ble Justice B Veerappa said, “Law as a subject is like an ocean; once you enter a law college, you are a learner throughout your life. Everyone knows that the legal profession is a noble one, and students of law have a greater responsibility to serve this nation. We are all like judicial soldiers who protect against injustice. I implore the faculty of this college to encourage students to join litigation. It is a field that is not for money but for serving the people. Because people are struggling now even after 75 years of independence, they (many) are unable to approach the courts.”

Speaking on the importance of the judiciary’s role in legal aid, he added, “The function of the judiciary is different from other organs of the state; it is divine. Today, the judiciary is trusted by the people, it is their last hope, and it is the only temple worshipped by every citizen regardless of their religion, caste, gender, or place of birth. It is high time for lawyers, law students, colleges, and the judiciary to ensure that the temple of justice should not crack from the inside.”

“Legal aid clinics in law universities provide an invaluable opportunity for law students to gain practical experience and make a positive impact on society. By working with individuals, who may not have access to legal services, students learn important skills such as legal research, client communication, and advocacy. Additionally, participating in legal aid clinics allows students to explore different areas of law and develop a sense of social responsibility. Overall, involvement in legal aid clinics is crucial for the development of well-rounded and ethical lawyers who are committed to promoting justice and equality for all,” added Prof (Dr.) Avinash Dadhich, Professor and Director, Manipal Law School, Bengaluru.

In addition to the inauguration of the Legal Aid Clinic, MLS also organized a Competition Law Awareness Programme in collaboration with the Competition Commission of India. The event was attended by captains of the legal and corporate field and aimed to raise awareness about competition law in India.
