Mayor Jammu chairs awareness cum interaction session on Polythene Ban at PSPS Govt College for Women

JAMMU : Waste Management Committee and G20 club of Padma Shri Padma Sachdev Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, in collaboration with Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Thursday organised an Awareness cum Interactive session on Polythene Ban – a mass movement on “Banning Polythene”.

Rajinder Sharma, Mayor Jammu was the Chief Guest and Baldev Baloria, Deputy Mayor Jammu was the Guest of Honor on the occasion.

The programme started with lighting of the traditional lamp by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Principal of the College and senior faculty followed by recitation of Saraswati vandana by Dr Vijender Kumar, HOD Sanskrit Department.

Rajinder Sharma, Mayor Jammu, in his address, highlighted the major challenges faced to the nation as well as Jammu due to massive urbanization. He also mentioned that Plastic waste is a major challenge and initiatives to ban plastic and polythene have been taken by JMC as per G20 objectives.

Baldev Baloria, Deputy Mayor, in his address, acquainted the audience with various steps taken by JMC in controlling plastic pollution.

Earlier, Prof. Menu Mahajan, the College Principal presented the formal welcome address and apprised the gathering about the importance of clean environment and urgency of banning Polythene from the city of temples.

The Principal emphasised that the Institution is taking initiatives to make this campus plastic and polythene free. She further added that how Plastic has come to be used extensively since the past 30 years and as it is not degradable, is leading to various ailments. She insisted that the students as stakeholders should play a positive role by coming forward with innovative ideas to reduce the use of Plastic and be the ambassadors of change.

During the program, a documentary on “Hazards of plastic and use of biodegradable carry bags” by DRDO was also shown to the students. A Symposium on the topic “Why polythene to be banned” was also organized in which many students expressed thought provoking views. The Symposium was adjudged by Prof. Mamta Gupta, Dean Commerce, Prof. Kamlesh Salathia, Dean Sciences, and Prof. Anjali Bhat, Dean Social Sciences.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions were conferred upon Mehak Pawar , Sanchita , and jointly to Mansha Akhtar & Prabjot Kour, respectively.

A pledge was also taken by all including JMC team members, faculty and students of College for shunning use of single use plastic and Polythene to curb this menace. Students also raised slogans like “Say No To Plastic”, “Polythene Hatao Bharat Ko Bachao”, etc to spread awareness among the masses.

The stage was managed by Dr M K Mussa Convenor Of the Waste Management Committee. The staff secretary Prof Mala Bhasin besides committee members of Waste management present in the event were Prof. Harmeet Singh, Dr. Ujjwal sharma , Prof. Paramjeet singh, Prof. Suman Bala , Prof. Roopali Salathia, Dr. Ravinder Sharma, Prof. Rajinder Kumar, and Prof. Nidhi Suri graced the occasion. Technical support in the program was provided by Dr.Ashok Kumar (HOD Biochemistry) and the program concluded with the formal vote of thanks presented by Prof. Suman Bala.
