McMaster University Honors Excellence: Three Faculty Members Named Distinguished University Professors
Three outstanding faculty members have been conferred the title of Distinguished University Professor.
Daniel Coleman, Mark Crowther and Stuart Phillips have earned the recognition, which is given to faculty members who have demonstrated distinction and impact well beyond McMaster in one or more fields of endeavour.
Those awarded the title must have demonstrated an outstanding and sustained research record that demonstrates international impact and recognition. They should also be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning and a history of service that has had an impact on the community.
Coleman, Crowther and Phillips will be formally recognized at this year’s Fall Convocation ceremonies.

DANIEL COLEMAN
Coleman, a professor of English & Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Humanities, is fascinated by the power of narrative arts to generate a sense of place and community, mindfulness and especially wonder.
His books include Masculine Migrations (1998), The Scent of Eucalyptus (2003), White Civility (2006; best book in the Humanities in Canada), In Bed With the Word (2009), and Yardwork: A Biography of an Urban Place (2017, RBC Taylor Prize finalist).
He has co-edited ten scholarly volumes on topics such as early Canadian culture, Caribbean Canadian writing, masculinities, postcoloniality, race, the retooling of the humanities and displacement.
He is co-director of McMaster’s Centre for Community Engaged Narrative Arts.
MARK CROWTHER
Crowther is the chair of and a professor in the Department of Medicine, as well as the Leo Pharma Chair in Thromboembolism Research at McMaster.
He is also chair of the Senior Research Committee for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, a past treasurer of the American Society of Hematology and past president of The Anticoagulation Forum.
His clinical activities focus on patients with thromboembolic disorders and his research examines methods to prevent and treat thrombosis.
Crowther has more than 580 peer-reviewed publications with an H factor of more than 130 (Google Scholar) and has presented at more than 550 meetings worldwide.
He has been inducted into the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
Crowther also recently completed his LLM at Osgoode Hall Law School.
STUART PHILLIPS
Phillips is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and a member of the School of Medicine at McMaster University.
He is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Skeletal Muscle Health. Phillips’ work centres on the interaction of exercise/physical activity and nutrition in skeletal muscle and body composition.
Phillips is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS).
He has delivered over 350 public presentations, including more than 60 keynote talks, to academic institutions across five continents.
