Minimally invasive double valve replacement done at JNMC
ALIGARH : In a breakthrough surgery conducted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, a team of Cardiothoracic surgeons, led by Dr Mohammad Azam Haseen, has done double valve replacement using the minimally invasive technique for the first time in Uttar Pradesh.
Prof Haseen, Chairperson, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery said that Devpal, a 60-year-old male resident of Khurja, Bulandshahar was diagnosed as a case of narrowing of two valves of the heart for which he needed surgery. Prof. Asif Hasan, Chairperson, Department of Cardiology diagnosed the patient and referred him for surgery to Cardiothoracic surgeons.
The heart surgery was meticulously planned and executed by a team of surgeons comprising Dr. Haseen, Dr Shamayal Rabbani and Dr Mohd Ghazanfar. The heart was stopped for 90 minutes for the surgery during which the function of the heart and lung was managed by clinical perfusionists Dr. Sabir Ali Khan and Irshad Qureshi, and Anaesthesia was managed by Dr Manazir Athar and his team. Postoperative care was provided by Dr Azeem, Dr Tauseef, Suhail-ur Rahman, Imran, Nadeem and Rinu.
Prof Haseen said that conventionally cardiac surgery is done by cutting the breast bone, however, in this case, they did the surgery via a 5 cm incision in the patient’s chest, as this procedure has the advantage of good cosmesis, less pain and early recovery. He said that the surgery was done free of cost under the PM Jay (Ayushman) scheme of the Government of India and the patient was discharged after he showed satisfactory improvements.
Dr. Shamayal Rabbani informed that DVR via minimally invasive approach (MICS) has been done for the first time in Uttar Pradesh. Dr Ghazanfar said MICS is being routinely done in JNMC and the team has done more than 50 cases over the last 2-3 years.
Prof Veena Maheshari, Dean, Faculty of Medicine congratulated the doctors’ teams involved in the surgery. Prof Haris Manzoor, Principal and CMS, J.N. Medical College said it is a proud moment for Aligarh that such complex surgeries are being done in JNMC.
