Ministerial Webinar on the Safeguarding and Promotion of Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) in Africa

A “Ministerial Webinar on the Safeguarding and Promotion of Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) in Africa” is organized by the African Traditional Sports and Games Confederation (ATSGC) in collaboration with UNESCO, through its Regional Offices for Western and Eastern Africa, as well as the Sports Section at UNESCO Headquarters, with a focus on the Safeguarding and promotion of traditional sports and games.

This webinar will examine the potentials of TSG in promoting respect for difference, inclusion, intercultural dialogue reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence. The main objective of the ministerial webinar is to create momentum from key stakeholders convened, to further specify and endorse recommendations that were formulated on Quality Physical Education in particular, and the other areas of the Kazan Action Plan identified as priorities in the Africa region. These are relevant to push forward an agenda on TSG, including its documentation, alignment with national policies, the inclusion of vulnerable groups, discussion on opportunities for its integration into the school curriculum, in line with efforts toward enhancing quality physical education, the leveraging of TSG for development, including economic development, but also the potential of TSG for mobilizing new partnerships within governments as well as the private sector, among others.

It will bring together Ministers of sports and senior officials of Government for sports and physical education also experts of traditional sports and games, who would stimulate discussion on the following:

  • Traditional sports and games as lever for peace and sustainable development in Africa
  • Challenges and opportunities for safeguarding and promoting traditional sports and games in Africa: what actions from government
  • Challenges and opportunities for safeguarding and promoting traditional sports and games in Africa: role of non-state actors

Traditional sports and games and promotion of quality physical education

Above all, this Ministerial webinar aims at designing a road map for leveraging traditional sports and games as a catalyst for economic growth and development: mechanisms to be put in place, including infrastructure, policies, and capacity building to strengthen the confederation.
