Model G20 Summit organized

 

ALIGARH : The University Debating and Literary Club, Cultural Education Centre, Aligarh Muslim University organized a model G20 Summit on September 18, 2023 at the Kennedy Auditorium, with the participation of 20 teams of three students each, representing the member countries of the organization.
Presiding over the model summit, the chief patron, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Gulrez declared the agenda on ‘Climate: Change, Insecurities and Future.’ He elaborated on this year’s G20 theme, ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ and highlighted India’s contribution to the development agenda of not only the G20 countries but also on the global level. He discussed India’s role in the contemporary global politics.

Prof Gulrez assured that the university is committed to further the cause of academic excellence both in curricular as well as in co-curricular activities.

The guest of honour, Prof. Asfar Ali Khan, Director, AMU Schools urged the participants to get acquainted with the global issues and read newspapers to increase their understanding of various aspects of important issues faced by the world.

Prof. F. S. Sherani, Coordinator, Cultural Education Centre appreciated the holding of the programme to make university students aware of the functioning of the world organizations.

Dr. Sadaf Fareed, President of the Club, stressed the need of such public forums and elaborated on the concept of the event in the backdrop of the socio-economic and environmental aspects of the contemporary world.

Earlier, Secretary of the Club, Ms. Aafia Rizvi, welcomed the participants and guests and highlighted the objectives of the event.

Mohd. Shams Uddoha Khan, Chair and Areeba Dilshad, Co-chair, conducted the proceedings of the Model G20 Summit.

The participating teams deliberated on the agenda of the summit and discussed the topics, including “Artificial Disasters and Resilience Building” and “Carbon Footprint of Electric Cars”, allocated to them under the ‘Moderated Caucus’. The Model G20 Summit concluded with the voting on the draft resolution submitted by the Western Bloc, which was passed by majority.

Later, the chief guest of the valedictory session, Prof. Naima Khatoon, Principal, Women’s College, appreciated the initiative and distributed prizes to the winners.

The delegation of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia represented by Mohammad Ashar Mujeeb, Mahwish Mujtaba and Muiz Ahmad Zaidi won the best delegate award followed by the delegation of Germany represented by Gulrukh, Sheeza Jamshed and Ramsha Rafat who were judged as outstanding delegate. High Commendation award was given to the delegation of Argentine Republic comprising Yusuf Daud, Varisha and Imdadul Karim. The delegation of Canada represented by Rabiya Rashid, Zaini Areeb and Fareha Rizvi got the Honourable Mention award. Special Mention was given to the Russian Federation which was represented by Mohd Yasir, Areesha Siddiqui and Sara Meraj. The team of South Africa represented by Fatima Firdaus, Alisha Mirza and Humera was given Verbal Mention.

The jury comprised Prof. Salma Ahmad, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Research, Dr. Faiza Abbasi, Director, UGC HRD Centre, Prof. Sheeba Hamid, Department of Commerce, and Dr. Orus Ilyas, Department of Wildlife Sciences.

Ms. Quratul Ain extended a vote of thanks.

Hadiya Ansari, Nabeeba Omar and Anush Rizvi respectively handled the stage management, logistics and transportation.
