Monash home to “who’s who” of global researchers cited in top 1%

Sixteen Monash University researchers have been recognised in Clarivate’s annual list of Highly Cited Researchers on the Web of Science, which identifies researchers with significant influence in their field with papers that are highly cited by others.

The list identifies researchers who publish multiple highly cited papers over the previous decade in publications that rank in the top 1 per cent in the Web of Science citation index. The papers that perform in the top 1 per cent are based on the number of citations received when compared to other papers published in the same field in the same year.

Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Marc Parlange said the latest HICI results demonstrated the capabilities of Monash University researchers to deliver transformative impact worldwide.

“This outstanding result demonstrates the strength of Monash University’s efforts to recruit and foster the finest talent in Australia and overseas, as well as the commitment of Monash researchers towards solving the most pressing challenges of the age.”

Australia is home to a high number of world-leading researchers, and ranked fifth overall on the list, with 308 highly cited researchers.

“Australian research institutes continue to punch above their weight. In a country of just 25 million, the number of researchers recognised in 2020 is 305. Australian research institutions appear to have recruited a significant number of Highly Cited Researchers in recent years while also increasing their number of homegrown talent,” said Clarivate in their statement.
