Monash hosts Go8 Collaboration and Commercialisation Summit
Monash University will host Australia’s leading minds in Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) at the ‘Go8 Summit: AI Collaboration and Commercialisation’ (‘AI summit’) on Thursday 31 October 2019.
The AI summit unites thought leaders from Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight (Go8) universities, including Monash University, the University of Melbourne, Australian National University, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, University of Queensland, University of Adelaide and University of Western Australia.
AI is a significant strategic focus for Go8 universities. AI is a growing contributor to the international economy, with global GDP predicted to be 14 per cent higher in 2030 due to accelerating AI development and take-up, equating to an additional US$15.7 trillion.
Professor Margaret Gardner AO, President and Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, will host the Go8 summit and deliver the welcome address.
“Monash is investing in AI and data science by bringing together multidisciplinary teams to develop and understand future technologies and consider the impact of innovation and AI for social good,” Professor Gardner said.
“As AI enters a critical phase in its advancement, we are leveraging our expertise to explore the ethical, societal and legal implications of these developments.
“The Monash Precinct is the largest generator of scientific data in the southern hemisphere and home to the new Monash Data Futures Institute, which leverages this ecosystem of data and powers the University’s work in AI and data science.
“Monash’s Machine Learning Group is unlocking the value of big data, while the Monash eResearch Centre is exploring neural networks and deep learning.
“By leveraging these strengths alongside expertise in ethics, social sciences and the law, Monash will explore the potential societal and economic impact of rapid change in AI.”
The AI Summit will cover key AI challenges including improving Australia’s AI commitment, improving AI deployment into the economy and society and Australia’s AI policy, governance and regulation. It will foster collaboration between Go8 universities and key partners.
Professor Marc Parlange, Provost and Senior Vice-President of Monash University and Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, will open and close proceedings.
