Monash rises in global impact rankings
Monash University has strengthened its position as a global leader of change, climbing to 21st globally – among the 1,591 universities that participated – in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, and equal 7th in the world for Sustainable Cities and Communities within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) performance indicators.
The THE Impact Rankings are the only global performance indicators that evaluate the impact universities have on society, through the lens of the United Nations SDGs – a blueprint for a better and more sustainable future for all.
Monash submitted to 10 SDGs and in its strongest areas placed =7th for Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), =13th for Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3), 20th for Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17), =44th for Peace, Justice and Strong institutions (SDG 16), and 58th for Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9).
The rankings come following a report released last year by the Monash Commission with its perspective on future-oriented features of intermediary cities.
The report – The liveable metropolis: The opportunity of Intermediary Cities to deliver resilience, impact and prosperity – sheds new light on urban planning, transport, governance and inclusion by looking at the unique role played by intermediary cities.
The THE Impact Rankings sees participating universities receive an overall ranking as well as a score for individual submissions towards the UN’s 17 SDGs, with each SDG addressing a specific global challenge.
Since its launch in 2019, the rankings are gaining momentum with more universities opting-in each year to demonstrate their commitment to delivering the SDGs – with an additional 185 universities joining in 2022.
In addition, we achieved our best-ever performance in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023, ranking 44th in the world and placing in the top 50 for the first time. We also rose in rank nationally, climbing two places to second.
