Monash University Appoints Pro Vice-Chancellor (China Strategy) and Foundation President (Monash Suzhou)
Monash University has announced the appointment of Professor Aibing Yu to the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (China Strategy) and Foundation President (Monash Suzhou), which will be an instrumental strategic role for the University.
Professor Yu will step down from his current role as Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Suzhou) and then commence in his new position on Monday 17 June 2024.
Since Professor Yu began leading Monash Suzhou in 2014, the campus has become an influential contributor to the University’s success in China through its considerable advancements and achievements in academic and research excellence.
Professor Yu’s notable accomplishments include the development of the Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School (JGS) and the Monash University-Southeast University Joint Research Institute (JRI). More recently, Professor Yu oversaw the establishment of the Monash Suzhou Research Institute (MSRI), which has positioned our Suzhou campus to achieve further success in its future research endeavours. He has worked closely with his team to enhance the student experience across education, teaching and research, which has led to an increase in student placement numbers in postgraduate and talent programs in China.
A renowned global authority in particle/powder technology and process engineering, Professor Yu has authored or co-authored more than 1200 research publications, graduated more than 140 PhD students and attracted more than $100 million in research funding, including more than 60 ARC grants. He is currently the Foundation Director of the ARC Research Hub for Smart Process Design and Control and the BHP-Baowu-Monash Industry Knowledge Centre for Low Carbon Metallurgy, and previously served as Foundation Director of the ARC Research Hub for Computational Particle Technology from 2016 to 2021.
Professor Yu has received prestigious fellowships and awards in recognition of his transformative contributions in engineering science and application, including the ARC Federation Fellowship (2008-2013), AAS Ian Wark Career Award (2009) and the Jiangsu International Science and Technology Cooperation Award (2020). He has been elected a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (2017), a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (2011) and Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering (2004). Professor Yu has also been honoured by Monash University as a Vice Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow (2014-2020) and has been a Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor since 2021.
In his new role at Monash, Professor Yu will have responsibility for the development and implementation of the University’s international strategy pertaining to China. He will advise on matters relating to the University’s engagement in China and will be responsible for developing and managing new and existing relationships with governments, research partners and industry to elevate the University’s international profile in China.
We congratulate Professor Yu on his appointment and wish him the best as he begins his new role at Monash in June. Professor Jianglong Yu, currently Vice-President (Education) of Monash Suzhou, will serve as Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Suzhou) from Friday 14 June 2024 while the process begins to recruit Professor Yu’s successor.
