Monash University Forges Historic Partnership with European University Institute (EUI) in Landmark Agreement

Monash University and the Monash University European Research Foundation have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European University Institute (EUI). The agreement will strengthen the collaboration between Monash University and the EUI, enhancing Monash’s connection to Europe and its ambitions for global impact in education and research.

This agreement is the first of its kind between the EUI and an Australian higher education institution. It marks a new chapter in our existing collaborations and will spearhead future joint initiatives across education, mobility and research.

The newly signed agreement will enable master’s students, PhD researchers, and staff to benefit from mobility and teaching opportunities for EUI doctoral candidates. The MoU also outlines a scheme for curricular internships for students of both institutions and the development of joint executive education, research, and events.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) and Senior Vice-President Professor Craig Jeffrey signed the MoU on Wednesday 28 February.

“Monash University and the EUI are committed to fostering global educational and research opportunities for our students and researchers. This agreement is a reciprocal engagement that leverages the combined resources of the Monash University European Research Foundation and the Monash University, Prato Centre,” said Professor Jeffrey.

“Through this collaboration, we will offer our student and research communities expanded opportunities for exchange and cultural immersion, fostering the development of essential competencies and international networks.”

Established in June 2022, the Monash University European Research Foundation (MUERF) is an independent not-for-profit research foundation led by Pro Vice-Chancellor (Europe) and MUERF General Director Professor Cecilia Hewlett. It complements the University’s activities in Prato, Italy and has been pivotal in developing new research funding and partnering capacity for the University in Europe.

“Monash is proud to partner with such a prestigious research institute. This partnership will provide Monash staff and students with access to one of Europe’s most dynamic and vibrant research environments. We are excited by the new opportunities this will create, also through the inclusion of the Monash University European Research Foundation,” said Professor Hewlett.
