Monash University has announced the appointment of Professor Mike Ryan as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research).
Professor Ryan has been the Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) for the past several months. Before then, he was the Academic Director (Research Infrastructure) and Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, within the Biomedicine Discovery Institute.
Professor Ryan has also previously held the position of Deputy Dean (Research and Research Infrastructure) in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
Internationally-recognised for research in the area of mitochondrial biology and disease, Professor Ryan leads the Mitochondrial Biology and Disease Laboratory in the Biomedicine Discovery Institute. His research seeks to identify compounds that repair cell mitochondria to contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cures of mitochondrial disorders. His work is currently funded by grants from the ARC, NHMRC, MRFF and charitable foundations.
Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AC said: “The leadership qualities, experience and expertise that Professor Ryan will bring to the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) makes him well-positioned to continue building on the University’s priorities for research excellence.”
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice President Professor Rebekah Brown said: “I’m delighted to continue working with Professor Ryan in his role as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research). He has a strong track record in supporting early and mid-career researchers in developing rewarding and successful research careers, and he is passionate about inspiring current and future researchers to meet the challenges of the age.”
Professor Ryan is a former President of the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He served as a member of the Australian Academy of Sciences’ National Committee for Biomedical Sciences, and the Research Grant Committee and Selection Grant Committee of the International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (Strasbourg).
He has published extensively in top-tier publications including Nature, Nature Cell Biology and Science, and has served as a Member on a number of Editorial Boards.
