Monash University international student wins top honours at 2024 Victorian International Education Awards
Monash University international student Lara Salaysay has won two prestigious accolades at the 2024 Victorian International Education Awards, announced last night.
Originally from the Philippines, Lara won the International Student of the Year – Higher Education Award, and was later awarded the coveted International Student of the Year – Premier’s Award for driving change in climate action, international student welfare and youth engagement.
Building on eight years of professional sustainability experience, Lara came to Monash in 2023 to pursue a Master of Environment and Sustainability. She balanced her academic commitments with her roles as an English Connect facilitator at Monash University and a Multicultural Bay Ambassador for the Port Phillip EcoCentre, empowering international students to integrate into the Melbourne community.
Lara also established herself as a leader in environmental advocacy and youth empowerment with her contributions to the Victorian Energy Jobs Plan and international climate forums.
Monash University international student Ayushi Daga was also nominated in the International Student of the Year – Higher Education category. Originally from India, Ayushi was recognised for the remarkable impact of her extensive volunteer work to the Victorian community.
She provided crucial support to the Australian Red Cross during the February 2024 Grampians wildfires, using her multilingual skills to assist Victoria’s diverse communities. While studying a Master of Public Health at Monash, Ayushi has also been a champion of mental health and inclusivity through her roles with the Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation and the Iceberg Foundation.
Monash congratulates all award winners and finalists on their outstanding achievements and wishes them continued success as they strive to make meaningful, lasting change in their communities. These exceptional results are a further reflection of Melbourne’s leading educational offerings and quality of life, which has once again earned the city recognition as Australia’s Best Student City and the fourth most liveable city in the world.
