Monash University ranks 77th in ShanghaiRanking’s 2023 ARWU
Monash has ranked 77th globally in the prestigious ShanghaiRanking 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) out of 2500 universities around the globe.
The University has improved across two indicators in the 2023 edition, and maintained its position in the top 100 of the universities considered by ARWU since 2016.
Monash University Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Susan Elliott AM said the University’s 2023 top-100 position shows an ongoing commitment to global research excellence and a strong dedication from talented staff.
“Our continued strong performance in these rankings is underpinned by the dedication of our staff and Monash’s collaboration with partners, both locally and internationally and across sectors, to deliver high quality research on a global scale. We remain committed to delivering research excellence in the years ahead as outlined in our Strategic Plan, Impact 2030.”
This year’s ARWU result follows Monash’s exceptional performance in global university rankings released earlier this year including QS World University Rankings 2024 and Times Higher Impact Rankings 2023, in which we placed 42nd and 21st respectively. Monash’s place in the top 50 was also confirmed across a broad range of subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023.
Additionally, Monash placed =37th in the US News and World Report Best Global Universities Rankings 2022-23 and 44th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023, released last year.
ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities. These include the number of:
- alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals;
- articles published in journals of Nature and Science;
- Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate;
- articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded™ and Social Sciences Citation Index™ in the Web of Science™; and
- per capita performance.
