Monash University will establish two training centres and research hubs after receiving more than $8m in the latest round of Australian Research Council Industry Transformation Research Program funding.
The Federal Minister for Education, Alan Tudge, announced 16 research hubs and training centres would be funded through the ITRP, which drives cross-discipline research collaboration and training to find innovative solutions for key industry challenges.
Under the leadership of Associate Professor Yen Ying Lim from the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health, the ARC Training Centre for Optimal Ageing was awarded $4.58m of funding, aiming to address issues identified by older adults as essential for quality of life.
Working directly with industry, the Centre will train the next generation of researchers to understand, detect and improve psychosocial factors that support mental activity, physical health and social connectedness.
It will also give researchers the capacity and capability to drive the digital transformation of industries supporting our ageing population to enable Australians to live enriched, healthy and independent lives as they age.
The ARC Research Hub for Advanced Manufacturing with 2D Materials (AM2D), which was awarded $4.38m in funding, will provide a place where academics, students and industry come together to learn, apply, innovate, and deliver industry transformation in advanced manufacturing.
Led by Professor Mainak Majumder from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the AM2D Hub will use Australia’s large resources of critical 2D materials, which are key enablers of emerging technologies in Energy Storage, Purification and Printed Electronics.
AM2D aims to transform newly discovered materials into globally traded, high-value 2D products delivering Australian industry a greater share of this growing international market.
President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AC, said: “This funding will enable our researchers, in partnership with industry, to continue their crucial work towards addressing the most significant challenges of our age.”

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President Professor Rebekah Brown congratulated the recipients on their successful ARC bids.
“These two centres are fantastic examples of Monash researchers working closely with industry to solve key global challenges and deliver long-term benefits to these important and emerging industries,” she said.
