Monash University’s Professor Bob Wong Wins National Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision
Congratulations to Professor Bob Wong, from Monash University’s School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science, who has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Australian Council for Graduate Research (ACGR) Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision.

The 2024 ACGR Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision reaffirms Monash University’s dedication to nurturing outstanding research talent and fostering innovative research supervision practices of its PhD students.
Established in 2017, ACGR’s annual awards celebrate the highly committed leaders, supervisors, and professional staff supporting Australia’s graduate research candidates. They recognise those who work with industry partners and end-users to foster the next generation of Australian researchers and innovators.
The award judges commended Professor Wong’s commitment to empowering students through guided self-discovery and fostering a sense of community within his research group stood as exemplary.
“I am deeply honoured to receive the 2024 ACGR Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision,” Professor Wong said.
“I am committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for the next generation of researchers.”
Reflecting on his supervisory style, Professor Wong emphasised his approach of mentoring, coaching, and empowering students to become confident, independent thinkers.
“I always aim to tailor my guidance to address diverse learning styles and challenges, ensuring that each student develops a sense of ownership and agency over their projects,” he said.
As an HDR supervisor, Professor Wong has achieved exceptional supervision outcomes. He has supervised the successful completion of 23 candidates, of which 70% have completed within four years. During the last four years Professor Wong’s students have achieved over 55 papers in top-ranking international journals, delivered over 50 conference talks/posters and attracted $70,000 on external grants, receiving numerous prestigious national and international awards, including the 2021 Society of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Australasia Early Career Medal.
Professor Wong’s research spans critical areas such as behavioural ecotoxicology, invasion biology, and conservation behaviour. His students’ contributions have led to significant advancements in understanding wildlife responses to environmental change, with publications in top-ranking international journals and widespread media coverage.
Outside his academic achievements, Professor Wong is acknowledged for his commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. His Research Group stands as a model of diversity, comprising students from various backgrounds and cultures.
Professor Wong’s leadership extends beyond research supervision – he actively contributes to academic service and professional enhancement within the University.
