More scholarships for NUS Law postgraduate students through S$1m gift from Tahir Foundation
The National University of Singapore Faculty of Law (NUS Law), has received a gift of S$1 million from Tahir Foundation which will go towards providing more scholarships for their postgraduate students.
The gift agreement was signed today with NUS Law Dean Professor Simon Chesterman accepting the generous donation on behalf of the faculty from Dr Tahir, co-founder of Tahir Foundation.
NUS Law currently offers two postgraduate coursework degrees– the Master of Laws (LLM) Programme and the Juris Doctor (JD) Programme. Over the last five years, NUS Law has seen a steady year-on-year increase of more than 20% in the number of applications for its LLM Programme, while there has been strong interest from local and international students for its JD Programme, launched just last year.
These programmes play a critical role in developing high-quality law professionals and academic leadership in the study of law and boost Singapore’s position as a global legal hub, particularly in the areas of international arbitration and dispute resolution, corporate and financial services law, and maritime law.
The gift from Tahir Foundation will increase the number of scholarships available to students pursuing postgraduate studies at NUS Law, benefitting an additional 20 to 25 students over the next 6 to 7 years, depending on the programme and duration of study. These additional scholarships will be available to students starting their studies at NUS Law from 2023.
Professor Chesterman said: “We are deeply grateful to Tahir Foundation for their generosity. The additional scholarships to be offered will allow us to recruit more high achieving graduate students, while providing them the support they need to excel in their studies. The diversity of our graduate student cohort will also be further strengthened, which will in turn enhance the overall learning experience for all our students. This is an integral part of developing globally-oriented lawyers at NUS Law.”
