‘Multidisciplinary Approach to Cancer’ workshop at Dept of Radiation Oncology

Aligarh : Team Ovary, mentored by Prof Zehra Mohsin (Department of Obstetrics And Gynaecology) won the ‘clinical case discussion’ contest held on November 26 in the ‘Multidisciplinary Approach to Cancer’ workshop of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Team Head and Neck-2 instructed by Dr Aftab (Department of OTO-Rhino-Laryngology-ENT) secured the second place, while the third prize was shared by Team Lymphoma of Prof Malik Mohd Azharuddin (Department of Cardiology) and Team Lung of Prof Nishat Afroz (Department of Pathology).

The intensive workshop also included cutting-edge lectures, case discussions and interactive question and answer sessions to provide the participants with an enhanced ability to interpret and apply the best treatment options into their individual cancer practices.

In the valedictory session, the Chief Guest, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor spoke about how over the years, the implementation of a multidisciplinary approach in the intricate scenario of cancer patients’ management has proved beneficial.

“Multidisciplinary care enables patients to receive coordinated support and care from a wide range of specialists, which helps improve the treatment and makes sure that all patients get the care they need”, said the Vice Chancellor.

Prof Mansoor also shared anecdotes pertinent to the workshop and urged young doctors to develop an astute clinical acumen.

“The management of patients with cancer is complex and requires contribution from a range of healthcare professionals working alongside specialist oncology consultants to address patients’ needs and optimise outcomes. A coordinated, multidisciplinary approach enables shared decision making and comprehensive care of patients with cancer through a variety of specialties and support initiatives”, said the Guest of Honour, Prof M U Rabbani (Dean, Faculty of Medicine).

Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Principal, JNMC) who also attended the programme as the Guest of Honour pressed the need for increasing awareness on early detection and for avoiding leading cancer-causing lifestyles.

He also discussed the latest advancements in cancer care.

Delivering the welcome address, Prof Mohd Akram (Chairman, Dept of Radiation Oncology and Organising Chairman of the workshop) highlighted the steps taken at the Department of Radiation Oncology for revamping cancer care facilities.

Prof Veena Maheswari (Department of Pathology), Prof Rizwan Khan (Department of English) and Prof Saleem Jawed (Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences) judged the ‘clinical case discussion’ contest moderated by Dr Faraz B Rizvi.

Dr M Shadab Alam (Organising Secretary of the workshop) extended the vote of thanks.
