Nanjing University Hosts Delegation from NPC Science, Education, Culture, and Health Committee
On July 25, Xu Dazhe, member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and vice chairman of the Science, Education, Culture and Health Committee of the National People’s Congress, led a delegation to visit Tang Zhongying Building on the Gulou Campus of Nanjing University to gain an in-depth understanding of the practical measures and latest achievements of our university in serving high-level scientific and technological self-reliance. Yang Zhong, executive vice secretary of the Party Committee of the University, accompanied the visit.
The delegation of the National People’s Congress Science, Education, Culture and Health Committee first came to the lobby of Tang Zhongying Building and listened to the introduction of the comprehensive situation of the laboratory by Professor Chen Yanfeng, director of the State Key Laboratory of Solid Microstructure Physics of Nanjing University. Since 2002, the laboratory has achieved fruitful results in the scientific research of solid microstructures, and won 1 first prize and 9 second prizes in the National Natural Science Award. In the past five years, it has undertaken 80 major national scientific and technological projects, obtained 147 invention patents, and won 5 first prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels.
In the Dielectric Superlattice Laboratory, the delegation learned in detail about the outstanding achievements of the scientific research team in the industrialization and application of major scientific research results such as the National Natural Science First Prize, as well as the laboratory’s various initiatives in platform construction, funding sources, and social services. According to Professor Liu Hui, in recent years, the team led by Academician Zhu Shining has realized quantum entanglement distribution, quantum communication, laser communication, and microwave communication based on a mobile drone platform for the first time, and has co-built the Nanzhi Advanced Optoelectronic Integration Technology Research Institute with local governments, playing an active role in the development of optoelectronic chip technology and related industry cultivation in the Yangtze River Delta region.
In the Superconducting Quantum Device Laboratory, the delegation listened to Associate Professor Tan Xinsheng’s introduction to the various achievements of Nanjing University’s quantum computing research, and exchanged views on cutting-edge research topics such as quantum information processing and quantum algorithms. At present, the team has successfully built the first superconducting quantum bit measurement system in China, and was the first in the world to demonstrate the coherent manipulation of three solid-state quantum bits.
At the Center for Superconducting Physics and Materials Research, Professor Wen Haihu introduced to the delegation a series of innovative achievements and application prospects made by the team in the field of superconductivity, including the first observation of the separated-level flux bound state theoretically predicted by Nobel Prize winners in 1964; the first discovery of the superconducting energy gap characteristics dominated by d-waves in infinite layers of nickel-based superconducting films, etc. In particular, the work of scientists at the University of Rochester in the United States that lutetium hydrogen nitrogen materials can be superconducted at room temperature at near-normal pressures was overturned, which attracted great attention from the international community.
In the Mesoscopic Physics and Quantum Devices Laboratory, the delegation listened to Professor Miao Feng’s introduction to the research background, representative research results, talent training, etc. of the Physics and Brain-like Intelligence Cross-Innovation Team. This “young” team, established in 2012, has realized the world’s first “on-chip two-dimensional material synthesis laboratory”, proposed the brain-like computing architecture with the highest parallelism and ultra-high energy-efficiency wireless in-memory computing architecture, and recently won the special prize of the 18th “Challenge Cup”.
During the visit and investigation, Xu Dazhe and his delegation fully affirmed Nanjing University’s outstanding contributions in promoting original and leading scientific and technological research in an organized manner, and striving to achieve high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and build a strong country in science and technology. They also discussed and exchanged views on how universities can better reflect their role as important sources of ideas and backbone forces in stimulating scientific research and innovation, carrying out scientific and technological innovation and entrepreneurship, and promoting the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.
