Nanjing University Hosts Expert Exchange Meeting on Undergraduate Education and Teaching Evaluation

On May 30, an expert opinion exchange meeting on the review and evaluation of undergraduate education and teaching at Nanjing University was held at the Xianlin Campus. The head of the review and evaluation expert group of the Ministry of Education, former president of Peking University Lin Jianhua and members of the expert group, Deputy Director of the Education Quality Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education Jiang He, Director of the Higher Education Institutions Evaluation Division Sheng Min, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education Yang Shubing, Second-level Researcher of the Higher Education Division Ding Tongyu, President of the Jiangsu Provincial Education Evaluation Institute Zhou Ming, Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Tan Tianniu, President of Nanjing University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Tan Zhemin, and members of the party and government leadership team in Nanjing attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Lin Jianhua.

On behalf of the expert group, Lin Jianhua introduced the overall situation of this review and evaluation. He said that it is a consistent tradition of Nanjing University to attach importance to undergraduate education and teaching. The school is committed to providing the best undergraduate education in China. The reform goals are high, the efforts are great, the tasks are heavy, and the difficulties are many. The school party committee and administration attach great importance to each work and have a deep understanding. The reform has always been centered on the concept of “student development as the center”, a blueprint, continuous improvement, and continuous progress. After more than ten years of continuous efforts, the school’s undergraduate education reform and development has achieved remarkable results. Education is uncertain, irreversible, anonymous, and infinitely continuous. Future-oriented educational reforms should fully release the inherent potential of students, and promote undergraduate education and teaching reforms to a higher level with strong academic strength, a strong academic team, and a good teaching culture. Liu Xiangbing, Secretary of the Party Committee of China Institute of Labor Relations, Lu Jing, former Director of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Liu Yong, Vice President of Ocean University of China, Zhou Ya, Director of Quality Department of Beijing Normal University, Zhang Guangxin, Dean of Undergraduate School of Zhejiang University, Liu Jianya, Director of Ideological and Political Education Department of Central South University, as well as young teacher Zhang Naibao from Southeast University and student observer Ding Tangjing from Nanjing Normal University exchanged evaluation opinions and put forward improvement suggestions on education informatization construction, quality assurance capability improvement, new engineering construction, medical education, labor education, etc.

Tan Tianniu pointed out that the evaluation team, with a highly responsible attitude and a very professional perspective, used their sincere care for Nanjing University to objectively and accurately “diagnose” the school’s undergraduate education and teaching work, and put forward targeted countermeasures to solve the problems, which provided strong guidance for promoting Nanjing University to further deepen the reform of undergraduate education and teaching, truly comprehensively improve the level of top innovative talents, and effectively implement the fundamental task of estabschool should take this review and evaluation as an opportunity to make greater efforts to firmly grasp the political direction of establishing mlishing morality and cultivating people. Tan Zhemin pointed out that during the evaluation period, which lasted more than a month, the expert group adopted a combination of online and offline methods, and conducted a comprehensive, three-dimensional and in-depth evaluation and investigation of the school’s undergraduate education and teaching work through reviewing reports, reviewing archives, holding discussions and interviews, and on-site visits. They fully affirmed our achievements and put forward pertinent and valuable suggestions for improvement. In the next step, the school will combine the ongoing “Action for Progress” to strengthen ideological awareness, tighten the “string” of evaluation and rectification, gather the joint efforts of the whole school, ensure that the rectification is implemented “without deviation”, deepen reform and innovation, promote undergraduate education to “step up”, make careful improvements, and implement them one by one, and further promote the reform of undergraduate talent training and school development.

Jiang He said that the review and evaluation task was completed smoothly, orderly, efficiently and with high quality, achieving the expected effect of promoting strength through evaluation and striving for first-class. Yang Shubing said that in recent years, Nanjing University has fully implemented the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech, focused on the strategic goal of building the “first Nanjing University”, and deeply implemented the implementation plan of the “Strive Action” and achieved a series of important reform results. The school’s educational achievements are also an important guide and support for Jiangsu to build a strong province in undergraduate education. It is reported that, commissioned by the Education Quality Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education, 15 domestic and foreign experts formed an audit and evaluation expert group to conduct a new round of undergraduate education and teaching audit and evaluation of Nanjing University from April 25 to May 29, and carried out on-campus evaluation from May 28 to 29. During the evaluation period, the expert group attended classes, interviewed school leaders, department leaders and college leaders, and conducted field visits, held seminars with teachers, students, and graduates, and reviewed training programs, test papers, graduation theses, and other supporting materials. The expert group also inspected the Nanjing University History Museum, the Chinese Communist Party History Archives, the “one-stop” student community, the library, the basic laboratory building, etc., and conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and comprehensive evaluation and inspection of the school’s undergraduate education and teaching.
