Nanjing University Hosts Seminar on Advancing Planetary Science Discipline
On October 7, the “Planetary Science” professional discipline construction seminar of Nanjing University was successfully held at Gulou Campus. Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Wang Huijun, Di Qingyun, Wu Fuyuan, Pan Yongxin, Li Xianhua, Zhao Guochun, Xie Shucheng, Shi Shengcai, Cao Jinbin, Ni Sidao, Zhang Rongqiao, Pei Zhaoyu, chief designer of Chang’e 8 mission, Zhao Liang, deputy director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Song Yuhuan, director of the Education Department, Professor Qin Liping of the University of Science and Technology of China, Professor Shen Bing of Peking University and other external experts, as well as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Chen Jun and Shen Shuzhong, Lu Xiancai, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Nanjing University, Wang Rucheng, executive deputy director of the Frontier Science Center for Key Material Cycles of the Ministry of Education and other leaders and experts from Nanjing University attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Dong Ting, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering.
On behalf of Nanjing University, Lu Xiancai expressed warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to all the academicians and experts for their support for the construction of the “Planetary Science” discipline. He shared the development history of the “Planetary Science” discipline construction at Nanjing University, hoping to draw a blueprint for the future development of the planetary discipline through the wisdom and experience of the experts present. Nanjing University will gather resources from various parties to build a teaching and research platform integrating science and education, produce more high-level results in the field of earth and planetary science research and serve the country’s major strategic needs, and cultivate more outstanding talents.
Hui Hejiu, director of the Planetary Science Teaching and Research Section of the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, introduced the background, current status and future plans of the construction of the “Planetary Science” discipline at Nanjing University. The construction of the “Planetary Science” discipline at Nanjing University has achieved initial results. In the future, it will vigorously introduce and cultivate young talents to create a “first resource” force; strengthen the construction of planetary science research platforms, improve the support of “organized scientific research”; improve the teaching and talent training system, and highlight the characteristics of “strengthening mathematics and physics, integrating heaven and earth”.
The seminar was chaired by Academician Wu Fuyuan, Director of the Center for Integration of Science and Education of Planetary Science at Nanjing University and Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The participating academicians and experts conducted in-depth discussions on talent training, research direction setting, cross-unit and cross-disciplinary cooperation, and faculty team building, and put forward valuable opinions and suggestions on the construction of the “Planetary Science” major at Nanjing University.
The construction of the “Planetary Science” professional discipline is of great significance to the country’s realization of the major strategic goal of deep space exploration. This seminar aims to implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech when he met with representatives of the Chang’e-6 mission of the lunar exploration project, further strengthen cooperation between schools and institutions, and jointly explore the path of building the “Planetary Science” professional discipline, and make more contributions to serving the country’s deep space exploration strategy.
